Ryukyu Islands- Page 4

This was the first set of post-war stamps issued for use in all four guntos of the Ryukyus. Provisional local overprints authorized by the U.S. Administration before that time.

They were issued July 1, 1948 and listed as #1a through #7a in the Scott's catalogue. The second printing was issued July 18, 1948 and is listed as #1-#7 in Scott's. This is that latter set, depicting an edible cycad bush, lilies, Chinese trading junks and a farmer at the dawning of a new day.

Per Scott's description, the first printing used a thick yellow gum, dull colors, rough perforations and a greyish paper. The second printing used white gum, sharp colors, clean-cut perforations and white paper.

Both sets were on wavy-lined watermarked paper and perf 13, printed by typography.

Stamps issued before 1958 were denominated in sen and yen, with 100 sen = 1 yen. Unless otherwise noted, all stamps were printed by the Government Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Finance.
